Using your iPod as a Data Storage device by enabling Disk Use Mode (FireWire Disk Use)

Many people overlook the fact that an Apple iPod can be used as a portable data storage device for any type of file. An iPod can double as a FireWire or USB 2.0 hard drive for your computer and is capable of storing anything. This enables you to take data, image, or other file types from your computer and place them onto your iPod very quickly and efficiently.

Many people are unaware of these important features and do not understand what the iPod is capable of. In order for your iPod to be able to share non music files with a computer it must be configured so that the disk use mode is on. The follow are the steps you must take to enable Disk Use Mode:

If you’ve configured your iPod to be used as both a music player and a portable hard disk, (Disk Use Mode), you’ll need to eject the iPod from your computer before you disconnect it.

Simply select the iPod and then drag it to the Trash to remove it safely.

Now you are able to disconnect your iPod and take anywhere.

  1. Connect your iPod to your computer.

  2. Select your iPod in the iTunes Source list.

  3. Click the Options button in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window to open the iPod preferences window.

  4. Click “Enable FireWire disk use.” This will allow your iPod to both store your files and play your music. iPod Disk Use is now enabled.
