Using your iPod as a Data Storage device by enabling Disk
Use Mode (FireWire Disk Use)
Many people overlook the fact
that an Apple iPod can be used as a portable data storage
device for any type of file. An iPod can double as a FireWire
or USB 2.0 hard drive for your computer and is capable of
storing anything. This enables you to take data, image, or
other file types from your computer and place them onto your
iPod very quickly and efficiently.
Many people are unaware of
these important features and do not understand what the iPod
is capable of. In order for your iPod to be able to share
non music files with a computer it must be configured so that
the disk use mode is on. The follow are the steps you must
take to enable Disk Use Mode:

Ejecting your iPod while iTunes
is not running
If youve configured
your iPod to be used as both a music player and a portable
hard disk, (Disk Use Mode), youll need to eject
the iPod from your computer before you disconnect it.
Simply select the iPod
and then drag it to the Trash to remove it safely.
Now you are able to disconnect
your iPod and take anywhere.

- Connect your iPod to your computer.
- Select your iPod in the iTunes Source list.
- Click the Options button in the lower-right corner
of the iTunes window to open the iPod preferences
window.
- Click Enable FireWire disk use. This
will allow your iPod to both store your files and
play your music. iPod Disk Use is now enabled.
- Notice the icon that appears on-screen
- NOTE: Double-click the icon to see whats
stored on your iPod.
- Drag any file you want to store on your iPod to
the iPod window.
- When youre done, click the iPod Eject button
in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window. The
iPod screen will display OK to disconnect
when it is safe to unplug it.

iPod is smart enough to keep
your data files separate from your music collection. Now that
you can see what the iPod is capable of, it is beneficial
to realize the importance of being able to lock and encrypt

*It is OK to keep iPod disk use on and enabled while you
use it and listen to music. There is no need to
turn disk use off if you plan to continue using your iPod
as a Portable Data Storage Device. There
is no lost functionality.
